GRINDING MEDIA KNOWLEDGE
Grinding Media Supplier Evaluation Checklist
Ten questions to ask before placing your next grinding media order.
Start with operating conditions
Record mill diameter, speed, feed size, ore hardness, pulp density and target product size. These variables determine the impact energy and abrasion duty that the grinding media must withstand.
Compare material and heat treatment
Ask for steel chemistry, forging or casting route, quenching method, surface hardness, core hardness and impact value. Consistency across the ball is as important as the headline hardness.
Run a controlled trial
Test one clearly identified batch under stable operating conditions. Track tonnes milled, media additions, rejected or broken balls, power draw and product fineness over a meaningful period.
Buy on total cost, not unit price
The best offer improves throughput while reducing media consumption, downtime and safety risk. Require batch traceability, inspection records and clear acceptance criteria in the purchase agreement.
