GRINDING MEDIA KNOWLEDGE
Grinding Ball Size Tolerance and Roundness Inspection
Learn how buyers sample, measure and accept grinding ball diameter, ovality and surface condition.
Define the specification before inspection
State nominal diameter, permitted plus and minus tolerance, ovality limit and applicable standard in the purchase order. Clarify whether values apply at shipment or after any cleaning operation, and separate visual surface requirements from dimensional acceptance.
Use representative random sampling
Select balls from different packages and depths across the batch rather than taking only convenient top-layer pieces. Record package and heat or batch numbers. The agreed sample size and rejection rule should reflect order volume and inspection risk.
Measure diameter in multiple directions
Clean loose scale and use a calibrated vernier caliper or micrometer appropriate to the ball size. Measure at least three axes, including the maximum and minimum diameter. Ovality is the difference between those extremes; record individual results, not only an average.
Link dimensions to mill performance
Undersize balls reduce initial impact energy, while oversize or badly distorted balls can affect charging systems and size distribution. Combine dimensional results with mass, surface defects, hardness and batch traceability before accepting or raising a claim.
