GRINDING MEDIA KNOWLEDGE

Grinding Balls for Cement Mills vs Mining Mills

Compare feed, impact, abrasion and contamination priorities before specifying grinding media.

The duty is different

Cement finish mills often handle relatively controlled clinker and additives, while ore mills can see changing rock hardness, coarse feed and wet slurry. The same nominal ball diameter does not imply the same impact or corrosion duty.

Set the performance priority

For coarse ore grinding, resistance to repeated impact and breakage may dominate. For fine cement grinding, stable wear, product contamination and consistent size distribution can matter more. Both circuits need adequate toughness and controlled hardness.

Specify the mill conditions

Tell suppliers the mill diameter and speed, feed and product size, wet or dry operation, liner type, expected charge and current media consumption. Ask for chemistry, surface and core hardness, impact data and batch traceability.

Compare by trial, not labels

Do not assume forged or cast media wins every application. Run a controlled trial and compare delivered cost per tonne, throughput, energy, product quality, media wear and broken balls under similar operating conditions.
