Grinding Balls for SAG Mills vs Ball Mills

Compare impact duty, ball size, hardness and purchasing criteria for SAG and ball mill grinding media.

The breakage mechanism is different

A SAG mill combines ore and a smaller steel charge, handling coarse feed and high-energy impacts. A downstream ball mill usually receives finer feed and relies more on repeated impact and abrasion. The same alloy and hardness target will not automatically perform equally in both duties.

SAG media prioritize toughness

Large balls in a SAG mill must survive cataracting impacts, variable ore hardness and occasional liner strikes. Excessive hardness without sufficient core toughness can increase spalling or breakage. Buyers should provide mill diameter, speed, largest feed size, liner design and observed failure mode when requesting a recommendation.

Ball mill media prioritize stable wear

Ball mills commonly use a graded charge with smaller diameters. Consistent wear rate, retained roundness and an appropriate hardness profile help maintain the size distribution and product target. Media that are too soft may deform; media that are too brittle can create fragments and upset the charge.

Specify and compare by total operating result

Separate specifications by mill stage, diameter and operating conditions. Require chemistry, surface and core hardness, impact data, dimensional tolerance and traceability. During trials compare consumption per tonne, broken balls, throughput, power, liner interaction and delivered cost rather than unit price alone.
